  • 1948 
    • At the national Congress of the American Recreation Society (ARS), the Hospital Recreation Society (HRS) becomes a reality. Members predominantly represented practitioners from veterans and military hospitals who embraced a "recreation for all" philosophy
  • 1952
    • A Recreation Therapy Section is established with the Recreation Division of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER). The primary emphasis of this membership focused on recreation and adapted physical education and sport programs in special and public schools
  • 1953
    • The National Association of Recreational Therapists (NART) is organized. This membership was composed of personnel from state hospitals and schools and was concerned with the clinical practice of therapeutic recreation. The major premise was that therapeutic recreation could as an intervention or specific tool in treatment/rehabilitation
  • 1963
    • Vocational Rehabilitation Act
      • Training and research funds recreation for all the ill and handicapped. The first recognition by a specific federal agency of the importance of recreation services in rehabilitation 
  • 1966
    • Branch status is given to the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS)
  • 1968
    • PL 90-480 Architectural Barriers Act
      • "Any building of facility, constructed in whole or part by federal funds, must be accessible to and usable by the physically handicapped" 
      • Predecessor of ADA
  • 1975
    • PL 94-142 Education of All Handicapped Children Act
      • Requires a free and appropriate education for all handicapped children
      • Recreation required by law for all children
  • 1984
    • The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) is founded. The focus of the new organization is to provide for more aggressive growth of clinical practice and specialization within therapeutic recreation
  • 1989
    • PL 101-336 The Americans with Disabilities Act
      • Provides comprehensive guidelines on banning discrimination against people with disabilities. A civil rights statute that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in sectors of private and public employment, all public services (including recreation), public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications
  • 1990
    • I was born
  • 1998
    • The Alliance for Therapeutic Recreation is formed. Both ATRA and NTRS agree to work jointly on tasks that will benefit consumers of therapeutic recreation and the TR profession 
  • 2008
    • I was accepted into Brigham Young University
  • 2010
    • Took my fist TR classes
  • 2011 - 2012
    • Served a mission
  • 2013
    • enrolled in Intro to TR with Dr. Z!!!!
  • 2014
    • will graduate with bachelors in Therapeutic Recreation and Ballroom dance
  • 2014 - forever
    • use therapeutic recreation to benefit others:)
